ABOUT ME
Mattie McGarey is a multidisciplinary artist from Colorado. Mattie McGarey graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2018 with a BA in Philosophy and a BFA in Dance. At CU Boulder Mattie studied with esteemed dance artists such as Rennie Harris, Michelle Ellsworth, Helanius J. Wilkins, Erika Randall, Larry Southall, Gesel Mason, and many others.
In 2018, she had the opportunity to study in Ga'aton, Israel with the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company where she trained intensely in Gaga, ballet, and contemporary dance under the direction of Yamit Kalef, Denise Peri, Oryan Yohanan, and Sharon Vaisvaser, among others. After relocating to New York, Mattie premiered her first evening length work, Rubberneck, at the Yale University Cabaret in 2019, and has since created multiple dance films and solo works. Her dance film Fits and Starts, earned Best Dance Film of 2020 in the Strangelove Film Festival and was screened as their selection in their 2021 popup festival in England.
In 2023 Mattie trained with Noa Wertheim and Adi Sha’al at Vertigo Dance Company in Netiv HaLamed-Heh, Israel and had the opportunity to connect her dance work and training with her interest in collaborating with the earth in movement.
As a performer, Mattie has danced at Dixon Place, the Boulder Opera Company and Omaha Under the Radar. She has also trained with renowned Hip Hop choreographer, Rennie Harris, as an understudy in his company Rennie Harris Puremovement and with Aundrea Anderson for her company Bitedown Works.
Mattie currently works as a personal trainer and freelance dance artist in New York. She makes solo work and is exploring partnering, contact improvisation, and found material art.
